Meniscus tear is when the cartilage between the knee joint gets compromised due to excessive twisting of the knee. Think of basketball, soccer players cutting and changing directions. According to the study, 12-14% of the times, someone could be dealing with meniscus injury. If you are dealing with meniscus tear, you also have a higher risk of ACL injury as well.

A bad case of meniscus tear can mean surgical intervention is needed. BUT, if you have a small tear, there are things you can do to avoid getting surgeries, or even injections. We are NOT suggesting surgeries are not needed. We are merely saying there are CONSERVATIVE treatments before you go straight for surgery.

Symptoms of meniscus tears:

  • Difficulty walking/standing/sitting
  • Difficulty making the knee straight
  • Difficulty going up and down the stairs
  • Unable to perform daily activities (especially ones that involve bending, twisting)

4 tips on managing meniscus tear:

  1. AVOID/ REDUCE workload - No more lifting, bending, twisting of your knee. Definitely no kneeling. Hold off on putting pressure in your knees for 2 weeks.
  2. ICE - reduce swelling of the knee by putting ice for 15 minutes , 15 minutes off. Do it 5 times a day.
  3. KNEE BRACE - Keep the knee stable by using a knee brace.
  4. Physical Therapy - Gradual progression of knee ROM, flexibility, and strength is needed. Find a professional who can help you in your recovery.
